Here are my five scenes, all under different lighting circumstances, that demonstrate what white balance does for a photograph. The type of white balance for each series of six photographs goes in order:
- Auto
- Daylight
- Incandescent (Tungsten)
- Fluorescent
- Cloudy
- Flash
(My camera does not have a Shade mode)
For each series I pick which white balance brings the most realism into the scene.
Shade on a Sunny Day
Sunny Day
Fluorescent Light
Overcast Day
Lamp Light
In conclusion, white balance works as it is supposed to - the most realistic white balance setting for each scene was often what it is supposed to be. However, Auto white balance setting also worked very, very well, and was often the most realistic white balance of the group - and even when it was not, it was nearly indistinguishable from the most realistic one.
